Resume Checklist
Use this checklist to ensure that your resume is complete:
Formatting tips:
- Keep your resume to one page unless you have relevant previous experience that requires more room
- Make sure all spelling, grammar, and flow is checked and double-checked, and then check it again
- After you have proofread your resume, have at least two other people look it over also
- Use a simple font that is easy to read. Arial and Times New Roman at 10 or 12 point are standard
- Keep your fonts simple - don’t use too many fonts, styles or sizes, they can distract the reader from what’s important
- Use standard margins between 1” and 1.25” - any more or less will look like you’re either trying to cram information in or don’t have enough experience to fill a page
- Keep your lists simple using bullets
- Use good paper to make a good impression – use 8.5 x 11 resume paper you find at most office supply stores
Content tips:
- Contact information – make it easy to read and easy to find at the top of the page
- Objective – make it clear and focused, and make sure it is specific to the job for which you’re applying.
- Education
- List your GPA if it’s over 3.0
- Include your GPA for your major if it’s over 3.0 but only your overall GPA if your major GPA is under 3.0
- List your graduation date even if you have not yet graduated
- List any college experience, even if you’re not finished yet.
- Include your notable accomplishments in your experience section, particularly those that relate to the job for which you are applying
- Use descriptive (not actual) job titles
- Use buzzwords and keywords to show your knowledge of the industry
- List your most notable extracurricular activities in the activities section
- Do not include personal data or potentially discriminatory data
